Planning Checklist

VMware exit readiness checklist.

Use this checklist to collect the facts that shape a VMware exit or Proxmox VE migration plan before hardware is purchased or downtime is scheduled.

Collect First

Facts that change the migration design.

Current Estate

  • VMware version, host count, host age, CPU, memory, NICs, and storage controllers
  • VM count, critical services, operating systems, and dependency groups
  • Current pain: licensing, hardware age, performance, support, or operational complexity

Storage and Backups

  • Datastore types, shared storage, local storage, snapshots, and growth rate
  • Backup product, restore expectations, retention, and offsite copy requirements
  • Any applications with strict consistency or recovery requirements

Network and Cutover

  • VLANs, switching, uplinks, management networks, and remote access needs
  • Maintenance windows, rollback tolerance, and systems that cannot move together
  • Target Proxmox VE expectations, cluster size, and support owner after cutover

Decision Points

The readiness review should surface the hard calls early.

Before a migration starts, decide whether hardware is reused or refreshed, whether storage changes, how backups are handled, what downtime is acceptable, and which systems need test migrations first.
